Istanbul’s Marmaray hits new daily record with 743,596 passengers
The undersea rail transportation system connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, Marmaray, set a new daily passenger record on Dec. 20, serving 743,596 people, Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, announced.
Year-to-date, Marmaray has transported over 196 million passengers, with a daily average of 600,000 passengers, Uraloglu stated in a written announcement. Recalling the previous record of 737,981 passengers set on Feb. 24, Uraloglu remarked: “This new milestone once again demonstrates the value of this investment.”
1.226 billion passengers carried since inception
Highlighting the line’s efficiency, Uraloglu noted that citizens can travel between Sirkeci and Uskudar in as little as four minutes, unaffected by weather.
“Marmaray, one of our flagship projects, connects two continents via the world’s deepest immersed tube tunnel at 60.46 meters,” he said.
Since its inauguration on Oct. 29, 2013, Marmaray has served 1.226 billion passengers, with the numbers increasing each year, Uraloglu added.
