First person to undergo brain chip implant making good recovery: Elon Musk
The first human with a Neuralink implant is on the road to recovery, with promising neuron spike detection
Elon Musk said the first human to receive an implant from Neuralink Sunday is “recovering well.”
“Initial results show promising neuron spike detection,” he announced on social media platform X, months after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the brain-chip startup clearance to conduct its first trial on humans.
The National Institute of Health defines neurons as cells that transmit messages throughout the body, enabling them to perform various functions. Neuronal spikes represent the activity of neurons, essentially depicting how they communicate.
Founded by Elon Musk in 2016 with seven scientists and engineers, Neuralink announced its first implant trial in September. The company stated that a Neuralink-developed robot called R1 would surgically insert the implants in the participants’ brains.
Neuralink, based in California, is seeking participants who have quadriplegia due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for the trial.
The company’s ultimate aim is to create a “generalized brain interface” to restore autonomy for patients with unmet medical needs and unlock human potential.
The implants are designed to be “cosmetically invisible” and allow for computer or mobile device control anywhere, while the specially designe R1 robot inserts the fine threads precisely where needed.
