EU formally requested that Shein, the China-founded e-commerce giant provide internal documents and detailed information regarding risks associated with illegal content and products on its platform.

In a statement released on Feb. 6, the European Commission announced that it had issued an official request for information under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which regulates online platforms to ensure consumer protection, transparency and accountability.

Personal data privacy is also subject

“Moreover, the Commission is requesting Shein to provide detailed information on the measures adopted to mitigate risks relating to consumer protection, public health and users’ wellbeing,” the statement read.

The Commission also requested details on Shein’s policies regarding the protection of users’ personal data. Shein must submit the requested information by Feb. 27, after which the Commission will evaluate its response and determine the next steps.

Large companies and digital platforms operating in Europe are required to comply with EU regulations, as firms that violate these rules may face substantial fines.

The Commission has also launched an investigation into Temu, Shein’s competitor and a subsidiary of Chinese e-commerce giant PDD Holdings, under the DSA. Currently, 12 million packages valued under €150 ($154.98) arrive in the EU daily, with 91% originating from China.
