EU orders Apple to open its ecosystem to competitors

The European Union has mandated Apple to open its closed ecosystem to competitors under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The European Commission has outlined two legally binding decisions requiring Apple to take specific measures to ensure interoperability.
Ensuring greater access for device manufacturers and developers
The first decision targets iOS connectivity features used for paired devices such as smartwatches and headphones. The EU’s directive aims to provide device manufacturers and app developers with better access to iPhone functionalities that interact with such accessories.
The second decision focuses on improving transparency and efficiency for developers who seek interoperability with iPhone and iPad features. It also includes granting third parties access to technical documentation on features that are currently unavailable to them.
Apple faces legal obligations under EU rules
The EU’s decisions are legally binding, and Apple must comply with the stipulated measures under the specified conditions. Failure to adhere to the rules could result in hefty penalties. Under EU digital regulations, violations can lead to fines of up to 10% of the company’s total revenue.
With these decisions, the EU aims to create a more competitive digital marketplace, ensuring fair access to Apple’s ecosystem for all industry players.
