The popular communication platform Discord has been removed from Apple’s App Store in Türkiye, following an official decision to restrict access to the platform.

The decision, made by Türkiye’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), stems from concerns over the platform hosting groups that reportedly promoted illegal activities and shared harmful content.

Access ban imposed on Discord

On Oct. 10, the BTK announced that access to Discord had been officially blocked in Türkiye, citing security and public safety concerns. The decision followed reports of illegal activities, including groups on the platform sharing content that allegedly encouraged criminal behavior.

The move came after several incidents in the country that highlighted the use of platforms like Discord for organizing illegal actions.

Discord’s app store removal

In addition to the access ban, Discord’s mobile application has been removed from the Apple Store in Türkiye. While the app remains available for users in other regions, Turkish users can no longer download the app from official channels.

Many existing users continue to access Discord via VPN services, but new users are currently unable to download it through the local app store.

Discord’s response

Discord has acknowledged the situation in both Türkiye and Russia, stating that the company is aware of the reports and is investigating the issue.

In a brief statement, Discord said, “We are aware of reports regarding Discord being inaccessible in Türkiye and Russia, and our team is currently looking into it.”

Concerns among Discord users

The sudden removal of Discord from the app store has caused confusion and concern among users in Türkiye, particularly among gaming communities and businesses that rely on the platform for communication. Many have expressed frustration over the lack of an official explanation for the app’s removal.

Alternative communication platforms are being considered by affected users, but the transition has been challenging.

It has also highlighted the challenges posed by harmful online communities, while many continue to express concern about the broader implications of restricting access to widely used communication platforms.
