China introduces first electric-driven flying car
Southeast University in Nanjing, China, developed China’s first electric flying car, named “Kunpeng No. 1.”
According to the Chinese newspaper Global Times’ report on Jan. 2, Southeast University highlighted that this innovative vehicle benefits from “distributed electric drive technology” and is capable of functioning both as an airborne vehicle and a ground-based car.
The university’s statement revealed that Kunpeng No. 1 can fly at an altitude of up to 300 meters (984 feet) for approximately 20 minutes.
The weight limit for takeoff is capped at 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds), while its ground speed can reach up to 60 km/h (37 mph).
“This marks China’s first flying car based on distributed electric drive technology. Unlike drone technology, which typically serves as the main carrier, this vehicle uses a car as the primary structure, enabling a seamless transition between driving on the ground and flying in the air,” the statement explained.
Powered by a high-capacity battery, Kunpeng No. 1 represents a leap forward in sustainable transportation technology, as researchers are reportedly working to extend its flight time beyond two hours, the university stated.
