Cappadocia, one of the world’s most renowned hot-air balloon destinations, has broken a record for passenger numbers in 2024.

Located in central Türkiye and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cappadocia’s stunning rock formations, fairy chimneys, and historical sites attracted 769,814 domestic and international visitors who experienced the region from the sky.

A tourism hub for ballooning

Speaking to journalists in Goreme, Nevsehir Governor Ali Fidan highlighted that Cappadocia is the world’s leading destination for hot-air balloon flights.

“The interest in balloon tours is increasing every year. In 2023, we recorded 27,945 flights, while in 2024, this number rose to 31,851,” Fidan stated.

He also emphasized the role of hot-air ballooning in promoting the region globally, adding: “Cappadocia is one of the most intense locations for balloon flights worldwide. Every day, more than 3,000 people get the chance to witness the breathtaking scenery from above. Thousands more gather at observation points to watch this mesmerizing spectacle.”

Breaking records, aiming higher

Governor Fidan revealed that in 2023, balloon flights took place on 218 days, carrying approximately 622,000 passengers. However, in 2024, flights were conducted on 236 days, pushing the number of passengers to nearly 770,000.

“For the first time, we surpassed the 700,000 threshold, setting an all-time record. There was an approximately 24% increase compared to 2023. Of course, our goal is to reach millions. I believe Cappadocia will achieve this milestone,” he said.

Following the press meeting, Governor Fidan visited Aydin Kiragi Hill in Goreme, where he engaged with local and international tourists watching the breathtaking scenery of balloons soaring over the fairy chimneys.
