Boeing CEO commits to ‘complete transparency’ in NTSB investigation of Alaska Airlines midair emergency involving a 737 Max 9

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun Tuesday told employees that the company is “going to approach” last week’s Alaska Airlines midair emergency by starting with an acknowledgment of “their mistake.”

“We’re going to approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way,” Calhoun said during a meeting with employees at the 737 production facility in Renton, Washington.

“We are going to work with the NTSB which is investigating the accident itself to find out what the cause is,” he added.

The company plans to work closely with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is currently investigating the cause of the emergency.

The NTSB’s investigation primarily focuses on the single aircraft involved, a Boeing 737 Max 9.

However, board Chief Jennifer Homendy indicated on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” that the scope might widen.

“We may need to go broader. But right now we have to figure out how this occurred with this aircraft,” Homendy said.

The incident occurred last Friday at approximately 5:11 p.m. local time. The door plug of the Boeing 737 Max 9 detached as the plane, carrying 171 passengers, ascended to 16,000 feet after departing from Portland International Airport.

The NTSB is in the process of determining the implications and causes behind this unusual occurrence.
