German automaker Audi has announced the integration of ChatGPT into its fleet, covering more than 2 million cars. This new artificial intelligence will allow users to voice-control navigation and climate systems within their vehicles.

Starting in July, Audi will integrate the generative AI-based chatbot ChatGPT into its vehicles’ infotainment systems through the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.

This feature will be available in Audi models manufactured since 2021 and equipped with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3).

According to Audi, the ChatGPT integration will facilitate voice-controlled adjustments for climate and navigation settings in over 2 million cars. This artificial intelligence is also designed to respond to daily queries.

“With the seamless integration of ChatGPT into our voice control, we are combining the strengths of both applications,” stated Marcus Keith, vice president of interior, infotainment and connectivity development at Audi.

In addition to a range of voice-controlled functions, our customers will now benefit from simple and secure access to AI-based knowledge. This is the next step towards a best-in-class in-cabin experience in Audi vehicles.

However, Audi is not the first automobile company to incorporate LLM-based chatbots.

Mercedes-Benz was the first one to expand AI usage by integrating ChatGPT into the MBUX Voice Assistant in 2023. A beta program for over 900,000 U.S. vehicles with the MBUX infotainment system began on June 16, 2023, making voice control more intuitive.

Additionally, at the tech event CES 2024, Volkswagen Group introduced Cerence Inc.’s Chat Pro, an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration, to its European lineup via a cloud update.

In early 2024, Skoda Auto announced that it would integrate ChatGPT into its Laura voice assistant for models on the MEB GP and MQB EVO platforms, offering access to a vast AI database while ensuring data protection.
