6 out of 10 cars in Türkiye are imported, show figures
In the first five months of this year, Türkiye’s automotive market saw a notable distribution between imported and domestically produced vehicles as six out of 10 cars in Türkiye are imported, according to data from the Automotive Distributors’ Association (ODMD).
Imported vehicles claimed a substantial majority with 61.79% of total sales, while domestically manufactured vehicles held a 38.20% share.
Sales performance
According to (ODMD) data, the overall sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles experienced a 6% increase during this period, totaling 471,743 units by the end of May.
- Passenger car sales rose by 10.25% to reach 375,097 units.
- Conversely, sales of light commercial vehicles saw a decline of 7.9%, totaling 96,646 units.
Domestic vs. imported sales breakdown
Out of the total sales volume of 471,743 units:
- Domestically produced vehicles accounted for 146,727 units (31.11%).
- Imported vehicles constituted the majority with 325,016 units (68.89%).
Trend analysis over 5 years
Over the past 5 years, the market has consistently favored imported vehicles over domestically produced ones:
- In 2023, domestic vehicles accounted for 35.20% of total sales, while imports reached 64.79%.
- The domestic share decreased slightly from 43.89% in 2021 to 43.81% in 2022.
Leading domestic brands
In the January-May period:
- Fiat led domestic sales with 50,501 units out of a total of 58,212 units sold.
- Renault followed with 38,285 domestic units out of 53,708 total sales.
- Toyota recorded 16,118 domestic units out of 23,651 total sales.
- Hyundai and Ford also made significant contributions to domestic sales with 15,247 units and 14,727 units, respectively.
- Togg reported total sales of 11,288 units.
Top imported brands
- Volkswagen topped the imported sales chart with 35,168 units sold.
- Chery followed with 26,990 units, Peugeot with 26,193 units, Citroen with 24,028 units and Ford with 22,586 units sold.
