Maysaa Sabreen was appointed interim governor of Syria’s Central Bank on Monday, marking the first time a woman has held the position in the country.

Sabreen, a member of the board of directors at the Damascus Securities Exchange since December 2018, has represented the central bank and also served as deputy governor and head of the Office Control Division.

She holds a master’s degree in accounting.

Sabreen is the second woman appointed under the new Syrian administration, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa. Earlier, Aisha al-Dibs was named head of the Women’s Affairs Office in Syria’s interim government.

Syria’s long-time regime leader, Bashar Assad, fled to Russia on December 8 after opposition groups seized control of Damascus, marking the end of the Baath Party’s rule after nearly 60 years. The takeover followed a swift offensive by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) who captured key cities in under two weeks.
