Palestinians file complaint with the German Public Prosecutor’s Office against German government officials over alleged support of Israel’s actions in Gaza

In Germany, a criminal complaint has been filed with the German Public Prosecutor’s Office on behalf of Palestinians against government officials, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz, for “supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza.”

During a press conference in Berlin, criminal law expert lawyer Nadija Samour announced that they have filed a criminal complaint against members of the Federal Security Council, including Scholz, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Economy Minister Robert Habeck, Finance Minister Christian Lindner, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, Justice Minister Marco Buschmann, Development Minister Svenja Schulze, and Chief of the Chancellor’s Office Wolfgang Schmidt.

Samour cited the German government’s approval of arms exports to Israel, diplomatic and political support, as well as the decision to cut aid payments to the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, among the reasons for the criminal complaint.

According to press briefing notes distributed by the lawyers to journalists, it was reported that Germany approved 185 arms exports to Israel between Oct. 7 and Nov. 7, 2023, covering 28% of the country’s arms imports.

The European Legal Support Center, the Institute for Public Diplomacy for Palestine, the Law for Palestine, and the Justice and Accountability Initiative for Palestine were noted to support those filing the criminal complaint.
