ECOWAS removes restrictions on Guinea

West African regional group removes sanctions that were placed on Niger previously

The West Africa’s regional bloc known as ECOWAS concluded its leaders’ summit in Abuja with a final declaration that included the decision to lift economic sanctions imposed on Guinea. These sanctions were initially put in place following the military coup that took place in Guinea in September 2021. Additionally, the restrictions on Malian citizens working at ECOWAS institutions have been removed as well. 

The statement issued by ECOWAS also addressed the ongoing political crisis in Senegal, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing reconciliation efforts to safeguard the democratic gains made by the country. Furthermore, the leaders called for the immediate release of former Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been in detention since a coup occurred on July 26 last year. 

In a separate announcement made on Saturday, ECOWAS revealed the decision to lift sanctions against Niger, further demonstrating the regional bloc’s commitment to promoting stability and democratic governance across West Africa.
