We made a clear call on behalf of our country at the Socialist International Council Meeting held in Morocco. While our country is experiencing the migration problem in the most severe way, the world remains far from justice in this regard. Our basic expectation as Türkiye is to share the migration burden with a fair understanding of solidarity.

Ozel also stressed the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and urged global solidarity in addressing humanitarian crises in Gaza and Syria.

Right-wing populism on rise around world

Ozel said that right-wing populism, the radical right, and electoral authoritarianism have been on the rise globally for some time, posing a challenge to the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights.

“According to the U.N. Development Program’s Human Development Report 2023-2024, leaders who erode the basic rules and institutions of democracy are unfortunately increasing their power, while global support for democracy is at 90 percent. This is the paradox of democracy,” he added.

Solidarity in migration crisis

Ozel highlighted the disproportionate burden Türkiye bears in hosting millions of refugees and called for collective responsibility from the international community.

“While Türkiye faces significant challenges related to migration, our fundamental expectation is fair burden-sharing through global solidarity,” Ozel said.

He pointed out that while the Middle East accounts for only 5.5% of the global population, it hosts 58% of the world’s refugees, with Syrians making up 27% of this figure.

“Türkiye is one of the countries with the highest migration problem and the world refrains from treating it fairly. While Türkiye is struggling with the migration problem, our basic expectation and call is to be in solidarity to share the burden of migration in a fair manner.” Ozel added.

Social democratic parties and governments around the world must act in solidarity in defense of lasting peace and a two-state solution in Palestine.

In Syria, it is urgently necessary to build a democratic regime that will constitutionally guarantee the rights of all Syrian citizens and respect all identities and religious beliefs. In doing so, sensitivity must be shown to the protection of Syria’s territorial integrity.

All social democratic parties and governments should support this process.
