Hungary is expected to ratify Sweden’s NATO accession, removing the final obstacle to Sweden’s NATO membership, marking a historic step for the Scandinavian nation

Hungary is expected to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership on Monday, removing the last obstacle to the historic step by the Scandinavian country, which maintained its neutrality throughout the simmering conflict of two world wars and the Cold War.

Following the visit of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson last Friday, during which an arms agreement was signed between the two countries, the vote in the Hungarian parliament, which is expected to go smoothly, will put an end to months of delays in completing Sweden’s security policy change.

Stockholm abandoned its policy of non-alignment to ensure better security within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

As Sweden becomes NATO’s 32nd member after Finland, Western leaders say, President Vladimir Putin has effectively achieved what he tried to prevent when he launched a war on Ukraine – expansion of the alliance.
