Syria’s Salvation Government (SSG) announced that they have received direct assurances from Qatar and Türkiye regarding the reopening of their embassies in Damascus. Turkish officials have confirmed the embassy will reopen “when conditions are met.”

This follows the collapse of the Assad regime and the establishment of Syria’s transitional government under Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir.

Context

The SSG, formed after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, is focused on facilitating the return of refugees to Syria.

The reopening of embassies marks a significant step toward diplomatic normalization for Syria, as countries like Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have already resumed their missions in Damascus.

Details

  • New embassies: Qatar and Türkiye have promised to reopen their embassies in Damascus.
  • Acknowledgment: The SSG thanked countries such as Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and others for restarting their diplomatic missions.
  • Türkiye’s stance: Turkish officials have confirmed the embassy will reopen “when conditions are met.”
  • Public sentiment: A survey indicates 87% of Turkish citizens are pleased with Assad’s departure, with Syrians expressing gratitude toward Türkiye and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for their stance on Syria.

Impact

The reopening of embassies by Türkiye and Qatar is expected to strengthen diplomatic ties and could significantly influence the region’s geopolitical dynamics, especially as Syria transitions to a post-Assad era. The SSG hopes to establish healthy relations with countries that respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
