U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, in a call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, highlighted the importance of close U.S.-Israel consultation on Syria’s evolving situation following the ousting of the Assad regime, according to the Pentagon.

  • Austin reiterated the U.S. commitment to a peaceful and inclusive political transition in Syria and reaffirmed Washington’s mission to prevent Daesh from regaining a foothold.

Big picture

The deposed dictator Bashar al-Assad fled Syria over the weekend as anti-regime forces, with the Syrian National Army (SNA) as the main driving force, toppled his government in a rapid offensive, ending over 50 years of Assad family dominance.

  • In response to the power vacuum, Israel conducted airstrikes that destroyed much of Syria’s strategic weapons stockpiles.

Austin also discussed Israel’s efforts to recover hostages taken by Hamas during its Oct. 7 attack and urged Israel to address the worsening humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

  • The health ministry in Gaza reports that Israeli actions have killed 45,000 Palestinians, with nearly the entire population of 2.3 million displaced, leading to acute hunger and devastation.
  • Israel denies allegations of genocide and war crimes, despite mounting international criticism.

What’s next for Syria

The U.S. is closely monitoring Syria’s transition, advocating for an inclusive governance framework consistent with U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254.

This resolution emphasizes a Syrian-led process, free elections, and a sustainable political solution to the conflict.
