In 2023, Türkiye witnessed a staggering 82% surge in citizens seeking asylum in EU countries

The number of Turkish citizens applying for asylum in European Union countries in 2023 increased by 82% and reached a record level with 101,000 applications.

After Syrians and Afghans, Turkish citizens were the group that requested asylum the most. More than half of Turkish citizens requested asylum in Germany.

EU countries are increasingly granting asylum to fewer Turkish citizens.

The European Union Asylum Agency (EUAA) announced the “Asylum Trend” report for 2023.

Asylum applications made last year increased by 18% compared to 2022.

Germany led with approximately 335,000 asylum applications, followed by France with 167,000, Spain with 162,000, and Italy with 136,000.
