Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus addressed the pressing situation in Syria on Monday, emphasizing Türkiye’s commitment to supporting a unified, democratic, and terrorism-free nation. Speaking at Türkiye’s Grand National Assembly, Kurtulmus underscored the struggles faced by the Syrian people under the Baath regime and their ongoing fight for freedom.

“Türkiye, as a neighbor, will evaluate the developments in Syria carefully, without being swayed by any sentiments, and from the perspective of our national interests,” Kurtulmus stated. He outlined Türkiye’s focus on fostering a peaceful, democratic Syria while upholding the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The speaker reaffirmed that Syria’s stability is a critical concern for Türkiye, advocating for regional cooperation and integration over fragmentation. “Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are of critical importance for both the Syrian people and Türkiye’s national interests,” he said.

Kurtulmus also highlighted Türkiye’s role as a “mature and truly democratic country” in guiding the Syrian people toward stability. He called for the eradication of terrorist organizations destabilizing the region, which he claimed had long been bolstered by external support.

“Another priority is to establish a Syria entirely free from terrorist organizations which have destabilized the region through external support for many years,” he said.

An essential component of Türkiye’s vision for Syria, according to Kurtulmus, is facilitating the “honorable and safe return” of refugees currently residing in Türkiye, Lebanon, and Jordan. He expressed optimism about collaborating with a future Syrian government to ensure their voluntary repatriation.

Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the restoration of trust and improvements in economic and political conditions are crucial for facilitating the refugees’ return.

“The establishment of trust, along with the improvement of the economic and political environment, will enable our Syrian brothers and sisters to return safely, honorably and voluntarily to their homeland,” Yilmaz said.

Kurtulmus concluded by expressing hope for a brighter future for Syria, saying, “We wish the new era in Syria brings peace and prosperity to the Syrian people.”
