Texas wildfire, engulfing 1.1 million acres north of Amarillo, ranks as the second-largest in U.S. history

A rapidly spreading Texas wildfire has killed one, forced residents to evacuate, cut off power to homes and businesses, and briefly paused operations at a nuclear facility.

The Smokehouse Creek Fire, as it is named, has turned into a colossal disaster, consuming an unprecedented 1.1 million acres of land, making it the second-largest wildfire in the history of the U.S.

Fueled by a deadly combination of dry grass, soaring temperatures, and relentless winds, the inferno has proven challenging, with current efforts managing only a 3% containment rate.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declared a disaster in response to the crisis, extending the declaration to encompass 60 counties affected by the wildfire.

This move underscores the severity of the situation and the urgent need for resources to address the widespread impact on communities.
