Climate activists march across German cities, urging government action on climate protection and social security, backed by Fridays for Future and supported by workers

Climate activists marched in several German cities, calling on the government to invest in climate protection and social security.

Organized by the Fridays for Future youth movement, the demonstrations were supported by the United Service Employees Union (Ver.di) and joined by workers.

Demonstrators gathered in the capital Berlin, carrying banners with climate protection slogans and speeches calling on the federal government to take stronger action on climate protection.

Organizers said tens of thousands of people took part in demonstrations in more than 115 cities and towns across Germany.

In an open letter to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Fridays for Future movement called for increased investment in jobs and public transport, and more funding for social security.

The letter underlined that a sustainable and climate-friendly energy transition can only be achieved with major state investments and said, “Young people who have been fighting for more climate protection for years are becoming increasingly pessimistic about the future.”
