Turkish automotive market surpasses 1 million unit sales before year-end
Automotive sales in Türkiye reached 1,068,260 units during the January-November 2024 period, marking a 0.5% decline compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD).
ODMD released its automotive market evaluation report for November 2024 on Tuesday, Dec. 3, which includes data for the January-November 2024 period covering passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
In November alone, the combined automotive market expanded by 5.3%, with passenger car sales rising 3.5% and the light commercial vehicle market growing by 12.2%.
Overall, 121,094 units were sold in November.
Passenger car sales increased by 0.5% to 845,530 units, while the light commercial vehicle market decreased by 4.4% to 222,730 units.
SUVs dominate automotive trends
An analysis of sales by segment shows that 86.3% of the market consisted of A, B and C segment vehicles, which benefit from lower tax rates. C-segment cars led with 471,395 units (55.8% share), followed by B-segment vehicles with 254,103 units (30.1%).
- SUVs were the most preferred, accounting for 56.6% of sales with 478,286 units.
- Sedans followed with a 25.5% share (215,284 units).
- Hatchbacks made up 16.9% (142,500 units).
Fuel type trends
Sales of electric cars under 160 kW surged by 62.3%, securing an 8% market share, while sales of electric cars over 160 kW declined by 15.1%, holding 1.8% of the market.
- Gasoline-powered cars dominated the market by a 61.7% share (521,845 units).
- Hybrid vehicles followed by 17.7% market share (149,343 units).
- Diesel cars preferred by 10.1% (85,517 units).
- Electric cars surpass 9.9% (83,298 units).
- LPG-powered vehicles ranked last at 0.7% (5,527 units).
Transmission, body style preferences
Automatic transmission vehicles accounted for 91.2% of sales (770,999 units), while manual transmission vehicles made up 8.8% (74,531 units).
Among light commercial vehicles, vans were the most popular body type, holding a 74.1% market share (165,142 units), followed by pickups at 12.7% (28,356 units).
