Türkiye’s daily social aid of 50 cents sparks criticism

Millions of households in Türkiye have become increasingly reliant on social assistance due to the ongoing economic crisis.

According to the budget data announced by the Ministry of Family and Social Services, an average of ₺2,192 ($63.1) was allocated per household in 2023, and ₺2,280 is projected for 2024. These figures are set to rise to ₺2,494 in 2025, ₺2,873 in 2026, and ₺3,117 in 2027.

Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Ozdemir Goktas highlighted these increases during budget discussions, presenting them as a major achievement. However, the aid amount of ₺2,280 per month for 2024 translates to only ₺19 per person per day in a four-person family.

Is ₺19 enough to live on?

According to a report by BirGun, Republican People’s Party (CHP) Member of Parliament Ahmet Vehbi Bakirlioglu criticized the amount, stating, “With just ₺19 per day, you can’t even buy a tea or a simit. The minister praises this assistance, but this amount is insufficient.”

Social aid’s value in USD continues to decline

CHP Member of Parliament Aylin Yaman further emphasized that the value of the aid has depreciated against the U.S. dollar. She pointed out that the ₺2,192 assistance amount in November 2023 has now decreased to ₺2,280. “The government presents this as a success,” she remarked.

The ongoing decline in the purchasing power of social aid in Türkiye raises important questions about the sufficiency of these financial supports, especially in light of the country’s economic challenges.
