Besiktas‘ upcoming match against Maccabi Tel Aviv in Hungary is not only important for the team, but also holds broader geopolitical and moral significance, according to Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, President of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).

In an interview with TRT Spor, Haciosmanoglu emphasized that this match goes beyond football, reflecting key international issues.

Haciosmanoglu referred to the game as “crucial,” noting that it holds national importance, similar to a match for the national team. He underscored Besiktas’ stature as a respected club and emphasized that the TFF, the club, and President Hasan have been in constant dialogue regarding the match’s arrangements.

“This match holds considerable importance, and we are aligned with President Hasan Arat’s perspective,” Haciosmanoglu explained.

Türkiye’s support, decision on the venue

Addressing the location of the match, Haciosmanoglu revealed that the Turkish government and the TFF were in full agreement about having the match in Türkiye. He stressed that football should be used to promote peace and unity worldwide, underscoring that the TFF is committed to these ideals.

Criticism of global double standards, Russia-Ukraine conflict

One of the key points in Haciosmanoglu’s remarks was his criticism of the international community’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. “We are against all wars, and this situation stems from double standards in the world,” Haciosmanoglu said.

Sports should serve as a force for peace, not as a vehicle for division.

He voiced frustration over the lack of sanctions imposed on Russian sports teams, even as Russia continues its violent actions against civilians in Ukraine.

“While Russia continues to attack civilians, hospitals, and schools, their teams still play internationally. This is a mindset that disregards human rights and justice,” he added.

Türkiye’s solidarity with Palestine and Gaza

Haciosmanoglu also reaffirmed Türkiye’s unwavering support for Palestine, especially Gaza, stating, “We stand with our brothers and sisters in Gaza and Palestine.”

He expressed hope that Besiktas’s performance in the match would serve as a powerful statement, bringing joy to the entire Muslim world. “We believe Besiktas will rise to the occasion and deliver the right response on the field,” he said.

“Besiktas vs. Maccabi is more than just a football match”

In his last remarks, Haciosmanoglu framed the match as a pivotal event that transcends football. He highlighted that, in the face of global tensions, the outcome would carry political and moral weight, making it a significant moment for Türkiye and the global community.

This match, he concluded, is not just about sport—it is about sending a message of peace, justice, and solidarity.
