US citizen injures husband, attacks people near Taksim Square in Istanbul
An American woman, identified as Sydney Rei Huff, 27, was detained in Istanbul after a series of violent incidents in the Taksim Square area on Nov. 23.
The altercation began during an argument with her husband, Velican A, 26, at a local venue where they were drinking. Huff reportedly injured her husband and left the premises, initiating a string of attacks on bystanders and property.
Attacks on bystanders, damage to property in Istanbul
While walking through Taksim, Huff confronted Mert T., 30, near a market, grabbing his neck and causing both to fall to the ground.
During the scuffle, Mert T.’s gold necklace was lost, and his phone was damaged.
Huff then struck another pedestrian and shattered the windshield of a passing taxi. The driver, Velat G., later reported that his damages were compensated.
Police response, legal proceedings to incident in Taksim
Emergency medical teams arrived on the scene but faced resistance from Huff, who reportedly attacked them as well.
Police detained Huff following a complaint from Mert T. She was charged with “intentional injury” and “property damage” and released after legal proceedings.
Authorities confirmed that she has since been deported.
