Türkiye’s KAAN fighter jet still ‘hot topic’ in United States, India
Türkiye’s launch of the advanced KAAN fighter jet marks a pivotal moment in its aerospace industry, drawing significant attention in international media for its potential to alter global defense trends
Türkiye’s fifth-generation fighter jet, KAAN, has been making headlines globally following its successful maiden flight in February 2024.
The Indian media and international outlets like Business Insider are closely observing Türkiye’s strides in aerospace technology, led by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI).
Established in 1973, TAI has been at the forefront of this remarkable development, marking a significant milestone in Türkiye’s defense capabilities and broader global aerospace sector aspirations.
Indian media’s comments on Türkiye’s KAAN
“The journey from the decision to develop KAAN in 2010 to its first flight in 2024 is indeed an outstanding achievement,” said retired Air Marshal Anil Chopra.
This rapid progression is reflected in Türkiye’s aerospace and defense market size, estimated to be $15.27 billion in 2024.
TAI’s extensive portfolio, including the licensed production of F-16s and the Anka-3 stealth UCAV, underlines Türkiye’s expanding expertise in aerospace technologies. Chopra notes, “With the production of F-16s under license and other aircraft, TAI marked its capability in complex aerospace manufacturing.”
The TAI TF Kaan 5th Generation fighter, a project undertaken with support from BAE Systems and other international partners, is intended to replace Türkiye’s F-16 fleet and is also being considered for exports. Chopra elaborates, “TF Kaan is a twin-engine multirole/air superiority fighter, a significant leap in Turkish aviation technology.”
International interest in KAAN is evident. “Nearly 200 Pakistani engineers are involved in the KAAN program, showing Pakistan’s interest in this fighter,” Chopra pointed out, highlighting the growing global footprint of Türkiye’s defense products.
Türkiye’s KAAN continues to attract United States’ attention
On the global stage, the American think tank Atlantic Council has focused on Türkiye’s expanding role in defense. The Council underscored Türkiye’s significant position as an arms exporter, especially in light of its contributions to Ukraine. The Bayraktar TB2 UCAVs, in particular, played a crucial role in defending Kyiv.
The think tank’s analysis further predicts a broader application for KAAN jets globally. It states, “Ankara plans to export some of the KAAN jets as an alternative to Russian and Chinese-produced warplanes.” This reflects Türkiye’s emerging role in offering viable alternatives in global defense markets.
The Atlantic Council also highlights KAAN’s capabilities in warfare.
“KAAN is noted for its superior capabilities in all forms of air-to-air and air-to-ground combat,” the analysis read, pointing to its potential effectiveness in various combat scenarios.
