Russia summons US envoy for supporting 3 NGOs implementing ‘anti-Russian programs’

Russia warns U.S. Ambassador Tracy of measures to prevent interference in internal affairs, demanding cessation of support to NGOs, citing violations of Russian law

Russia has called in the U.S. ambassador to Moscow, Lynne Tracy, and warned of measures to prevent any interference in its internal affairs, as the state news agency TASS reported.

In a statement on its website, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded that Tracy cease assisting three NGOs: “The American Councils for International Education,” “Cultural Vistas,” and the “Institute of International Education.”

The ministry emphasized that an official note was handed to the ambassador urging the halt of all support to these NGOs.

The ministry cautioned that continued assistance would be viewed as violating Russian law.

Specifically, Russia requested that the list of educational projects and programs of these NGOs be removed from the U.S. Embassy’s official website and social media accounts.

Russia asserted these programs promote values contrary to Russian society.

Ahead of the upcoming presidential election on March 15-17, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated such actions would be met with decisive measures, including expulsing U.S. Embassy staff as “persona non grata.”

The ministry also made it clear that discussions related to the “dissemination of disinformation” about the 2024 Russian presidential election and the ongoing “special military operation” in Ukraine would be considered interference in Russia’s internal affairs.
