Togg maintains lead in Turkish EV market in February
Togg sells 1,201 electric vehicles in February, leading the Turkish market with a 25.48% share
In February, Togg maintained its leading position in the Turkish electric vehicle market, according to data compiled by the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD). Togg sold 1,201 units, capturing a significant 25.48% market share out of the total 4,713 fully electric vehicles sold in the country.
In the wider automotive industry, total sales of cars and light commercial vehicles experienced a notable 30.6% surge in February compared to the corresponding period in 2023, reaching a combined total of 105,990 units.
Changing demand patterns
In terms of fuel types, petrol-powered cars emerged as the frontrunners in the market, with 56,647 units sold, followed by hybrid vehicles with 11,336 units. Diesel car sales accounted for 7,855 units, while autogas-powered vehicles recorded 640 units. Notably, fully electric vehicles saw sales of 4,713 units.
When factoring in vehicles with extended range capabilities, which integrate a petrol engine generator to recharge the battery and propel the electric motor driving the wheels, the total sales figure for electric vehicles reached 5,799 units. It’s important to note that extended-range vehicles also fall under the “electric” category according to the Customs Tariff Statistics Position (GTIP).
The market share of petrol cars rose from 67.9% in February of the previous year to 68.8% this year. Meanwhile, the market share of diesel cars declined from 18.6% to 9.5%, and autogas vehicles decreased from 1.3% to 0.8%.
In terms of overall market share, fully electric vehicles surged from 2.1% to 5.7%, while hybrids increased from 9.8% to 13.8%. When considering all electric-powered vehicles, including fully electric, extended-range, and hybrid, they now constitute 20.8% of the total market.
On a model-specific basis, the Togg T10X emerged as the top-selling model, followed by the Ssangyong Torres in second place, BMW 5 Series in third, BYD Atto 3 in fourth, and MG MG4 as the fifth best-selling model in February.
Market expansion
The growth rate in sales for February, at 30.6%, was slightly slower than January’s annual increase of 57%; however, on a monthly basis, there was a notable uptick of 33% in the number of vehicles sold. This figure also represents an all-time high in vehicle sales for the month of February.
Despite the higher prices, experts attribute the robust demand to several factors. They note that disabled individuals are purchasing cars to take advantage of special consumption tax exemptions, and there’s increased demand from car rental fleets.
In terms of passenger cars specifically, sales surged by 39.7% year-on-year to approximately 83,000 units last month, following a 72% expansion in January when over 64,000 passenger cars were sold.
Alp Gulan, the board chair of Gulan Otomotiv, remarked, “There has been strong demand from disabled individuals for vehicles in the past two months.” He also pointed out that sales to car rental fleets have risen due to expectations of a robust tourism season in Türkiye this year.
