Interior minister defends democracy, denies wiretapping allegations
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya emphasized the importance of criticism in a democratic system, stating that while criticism is essential, it should never cross into slander. He added, “We must maintain the level of our democracy.”
Yerlikaya made these remarks following a tense incident during budget discussions at the Turkish Grand National Assembly Plan and Budget Commission. The incident occurred as he entered the meeting room, and addressed the situation by discussing the claims made by opposition lawmakers.
Denial of allegations regarding wiretapping
Minister Yerlikaya responded to accusations from opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) members, who had claimed that rooms and phones in Parliament were being monitored.
He categorically denied these allegations, stating that they were untrue. He also pointed out that open sources had revealed that it was the CHP who had attempted to block the session.
“Some of your own colleagues informed us about this,” he remarked, expressing his surprise at how these accusations were being linked to wiretapping.
Respect for democracy, rule of law
In his speech, Yerlikaya highlighted the significance of maintaining democratic standards within Parliament.
“We are under the roof of the Grand National Assembly, and we all took an oath. You were elected, and we are ministers in the government formed by President Erdogan’s will,” Yerlikaya stated. He acknowledged that “democracy cannot exist without criticism,” but emphasized that there should be a limit when it comes to suspicion, gossip, and slander.
He urged lawmakers to keep the level of democracy intact.
Addressing the issue of trustees
Yerlikaya also addressed the protests from CHP members regarding the appointment of trustees to municipalities. He pointed out that the Constitution’s Article 127 and Articles 45-46 of the Municipal Law (Law No. 5393) provide legal grounds for the appointment of trustees.
“We have been tested by terrorism for over 40 years, and we are fighting against a treacherous terrorist organization that has targeted our brotherhood,” Yerlikaya said, reiterating that their government’s efforts are in line with the law and aimed at ensuring the public’s safety and well-being.
Call for unity, patience
Yerlikaya called for a cooperative and respectful environment during parliamentary discussions. “Today, you will criticize us, and we will listen patiently. If you also listen to what we have to say with patience, it will create an ideal environment,” he said, stressing the importance of dialogue in maintaining democratic principles.
He also reaffirmed the government’s stance on local governance, stating that mayors should not align themselves with terrorism.
“Our democracy is not without protection. We have lived here for a thousand years, and as we enter the second century of our Republic, with the support and prayers of our great nation, we will overcome this plague of terrorism,” Yerlikaya concluded.
