Russian forces claim capture of two villages in eastern Ukraine

Russian forces have reportedly seized the villages of Makarivka and Leninskoye in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, according to a statement from the Kremlin on Saturday.

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that the villages were captured during an operation by its Tsentr (Center) group of forces. The ministry also reported advancements by other Russian units, claiming they had improved their positions and captured Western-supplied weapons and military equipment during the operation.

Makarivka, located in the Volnovakha district approximately 100 kilometers (65 miles) south of the city of Donetsk, was specifically identified. However, the ministry did not clarify which of the several settlements named Leninskoye in the region had been captured.

The situation on the ground remains tense. Earlier this week, analysts from the DeepState group, which has ties to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, noted increased fighting around Makarivka. Ukrainian officials also announced the evacuation of families with children from 16 settlements in the Volnovakha district, citing security concerns.

Ukrainian authorities have not yet responded to Russia’s claims. Independent verification of the developments remains difficult due to ongoing hostilities in the area.
