Immigration crackdown in Esenyurt, Istanbul nets 242 irregular migrants

In a large-scale operation named “Kalkan-29,” the Turkish Interior Ministry reported that 242 irregular migrants were apprehended in Istanbul‘s Esenyurt district.
The operation was coordinated by the Directorate General of Migration Management and the Istanbul Provincial Police Department.
Details of operation
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya shared the operation’s details on his social media account. The police, alongside migration management personnel, carried out checks in public parks, hotels, and major thoroughfares throughout Esenyurt. The operation involved:
- 370 police officers
- 93 personnel from the Directorate of Migration
- 31 mobile migration checkpoints
Yerlikaya emphasized that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration and human trafficking. “The process of sending the detected irregular migrants back to their countries has been initiated,” Yerlikaya stated.
Identification and processing
A total of 4,765 foreigners were subjected to identification checks and fingerprint scans. Out of these, 242 individuals were identified as irregular migrants. Authorities have started the deportation process for the apprehended individuals.
