Elon Musk meets Iran’s UN ambassador in private bid to ease U.S.-Iran tensions
Tech mogul Elon Musk, who has aligned himself closely with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, reportedly met Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, in an effort to ease tensionss between Tehran and Washington. According to sources quoted by The New York Times on Thursday, the meeting was characterized as “positive” by Iranian insiders.
The two met in a confidential setting on Monday for more than an hour, as reported by the newspaper, though no immediate confirmation has been provided by either Trump’s transition team or Iran’s UN mission.
If confirmed, the meeting would signal an unexpected diplomatic approach from Trump, who has often leaned towards hawkish strategies supported by conservative allies and the Israeli government. Trump, during his last presidency, withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal—an agreement forged under former President Barack Obama—and enforced a “maximum pressure” strategy, which aimed to isolate Iran economically, including pushing other nations to stop importing Iranian oil.
However, Trump has recently hinted at a possible diplomatic shift, portraying himself as a skilled negotiator willing to engage with international adversaries. This stance appears at odds with his previous policies and his steadfast support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has ordered military actions against Iranian interests.
The meeting also highlights Musk’s unusual role and influence in the incoming Trump administration. Known for his ventures at Tesla and X, Musk has been a fixture in Trump’s orbit, reportedly even joining him on calls with international leaders.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, considered a moderate, voiced his desire to address lingering concerns about Iran’s nuclear program. Meeting with the head of the UN nuclear watchdog on Thursday, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s commitment to a “peaceful” nuclear agenda, suggesting that Tehran is prepared to dispel doubts over its intentions.
