A welcoming ceremony at the international arrivals terminal honored the event. Istanbul Airport’s operator, IGA, hosted the celebration, with IGA CEO Selahattin Bilgen and SKY Express Chairman Ioannis Grylos attending along with other officials.

Bilgen expressed the importance of this addition, stating, “Having the 110th airline start flights to our airport is a great achievement. Istanbul Airport was already one of the top three airports worldwide for the number of airlines it hosts. With this latest addition, we’re now second. By the end of the year, our goal is to move into the top position.”

New flights to increase tourism, strengthen Türkiye, Greece connections

Bilgen emphasized the benefits of SKY Express’ new route for both tourism and diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Greece. “SKY Express flights will strengthen connections and improve tourism between the two countries,” Bilgen stated.

He stressed the value of SKY Express’ network within Greece, particularly its links to the islands, as an added benefit for travelers from Istanbul. “This route will allow us to connect Athens to the world through Istanbul.”

Ioannis Grylos, SKY Express’ chairman, expressed enthusiasm for the new route, hoping it would bring more Greeks to Istanbul and encourage Turkish travelers to visit the Greek islands.

Grylos said, “We’re excited to start flights to Istanbul, and we hope to bring many Greeks to this lively city while giving Turkish visitors the chance to explore the Greek islands.” He thanked Bilgen and the IGA team for their support in making the new route possible.

Istanbul Airport expects 81M passengers this year despite industry challenges

Istanbul Airport continues its efforts to attract new airlines, despite recent challenges in the aviation industry. Bilgen explained that IGA is actively working on agreements with several more airlines, expecting to finalize some deals before the year ends.

“Challenges like the Middle East conflict and supply chain issues, such as the Boeing strike and engine issues at Airbus, have affected growth,” Bilgen noted. “However, Istanbul Airport’s infrastructure and the increase in flight frequencies are helping us stay competitive.”

Bilgen shared that IGA aims to close the year with 81 million passengers, up from last year’s 76 million. He also noted that investment in expansion projects continues to support future growth in airport capacity.
