Trump nominates New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as US Ambassador to UN
President-elect Donald Trump has named Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, according to multiple U.S. media reports on Sunday.
Trump confirmed the nomination, praising Stefanik as a “strong and smart America First fighter.”
Trump announces nomination to UN role
Trump, set for his second term following the November 5 election, emphasized Stefanik’s loyalty and strong performance as a GOP leader.
In a statement to the New York Post, Trump expressed confidence in her capabilities, stating, “I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and a smart America First fighter.”
Stefanik confirms acceptance of nomination
Stefanik, the current House Republican Conference Chair, accepted the nomination, expressing gratitude and humility in a statement. “I am deeply humbled by this nomination and look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to earn their support,” she said.
“I am truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination to serve in his Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations,” Stefanik said in a statement confirming her acceptance of the role.
“During my conversation with President Trump, I shared how deeply humbled I am to accept his nomination and that I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate,” Stefanik said.
“President Trump’s historic landslide election has given hope to the American people and is a reminder that brighter days are ahead — both at home and abroad,” she said.
“America continues to be the beacon of the world, but we expect and must demand that our friends and allies be strong partners in the peace we seek,” she concluded.
The New York congresswoman has been a vocal supporter of Trump, gaining prominence during his first impeachment hearings in 2019.
Notable absences in new administration
Trump’s spokesperson noted that former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will not be part of the upcoming administration.
Trump has reportedly met with several potential appointees ahead of his January 20 inauguration, including investor Scott Bessent as a possible Treasury Secretary nominee.
