Türkiye-Greece to strengthen political dialogue and cooperation
During the press conference, Gerapetritis discussed the current framework of political dialogue, the positive agenda, and confidence-building measures between the two nations. He mentioned that concrete progress has been made since he took office 16 months ago, underscoring the importance of sustained high-level contacts.
Both countries’ leaders, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, have held six meetings so far. Gerapetritis announced plans for the next round of political dialogue and positive agenda discussions to be held in Athens on Dec. 2-3.
Fostering closer ties between the 2 nations
Acknowledging the complex issues between the two countries, Gerapetritis stated, “We do not claim that the problems between us are solved instantly. Last year had its difficult moments, but each time, sincere and quick communication helped de-escalate tensions.” He reiterated the goal of bringing the two nations closer together.
Preparation for the upcoming sixth High-Level Cooperation Council (HLCC) meeting was also discussed, with Gerapetritis describing the HLCC as a significant step toward enhancing the positive atmosphere in bilateral relations.
Economic relations and support for Türkiye’s EU accession
Gerapetritis highlighted a significant increase in bilateral trade volume, with an aim to reach $10 billion in the coming years. He also reiterated Greece’s support for Türkiye’s EU membership perspective, provided that it aligns with EU standards and regulations.
Minorities as bridge of friendship
Discussing the topic of minorities, Gerapetritis stated, “Minorities are bridges of friendship for us. We have responsibilities toward all citizens in our countries to ensure equality before the law.”
Regarding the Cyprus issue, Gerapetritis reaffirmed Greece’s position, advocating for a bi-zonal, bi-communal solution in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions. He expressed optimism that a recent meeting on Oct. 15 could serve as a productive dialogue toward resolving the conflict.
Continued dialogue on maritime boundaries
The discussions also touched upon the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf disputes in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Gerapetritis noted that both sides have made a sincere start in evaluating the prerequisites for negotiations on these complex issues.
He emphasized the shared intent to maintain the current positive climate.
Regional concerns addressed
Gerapetritis expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, calling for increased humanitarian aid. He also noted the potential for a new crisis in Lebanon and its implications for migration challenges faced by both Türkiye and Greece.
The Greek foreign minister emphasized the shared commitment to counter-terrorism and the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation.
Concluding his remarks, Gerapetritis stated, “We are aware of the ongoing challenges. Even when we do not easily find solutions, we negotiate with a sense of historical responsibility. In a time marked by numerous crises, we are committed to contributing to peace, the preservation of international law, stability, and the well-being of our peoples.”
