TRNC President Ersin Tatar declares end of Cyprus federation talks

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar stated that negotiations for a federation solution in Cyprus are no longer viable. He emphasized the existence of two states on the island, highlighting that the TRNC’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.

‘Cyprus federation talks are over,’ says President Tatar

President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, declared the end of discussions on a federal solution for Cyprus, citing that all opportunities for a partnership with Greek Cypriots have been exhausted.

Tatar made the remarks during an official visit to Samsun, where he was welcomed by local officials and addressed the media.

“Discussions on a federation are now closed,” Tatar said. “The idea of a partnership republic with Greek Cypriots holds no meaning anymore. Despite our goodwill, every comprehensive plan proposed, including those by the United Nations, has been rejected by the Greek side.”

Advocating a two-state solution

Tatar reiterated the TRNC’s stance on a two-state solution, stressing the historical and cultural identity of Turkish Cypriots as a separate entity with the right to self-determination. He noted the proximity of Cyprus to Türkiye and highlighted the strategic importance of the island in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“There are two peoples, two states, and two democracies in Cyprus,” Tatar stated. “This is a reality that cannot be reversed. The TRNC, with its land, maritime zones, and airspace, has a significant role in the region and can contribute greatly to the wider Turkish world.”

International recognition and diplomatic efforts

Tatar emphasized ongoing efforts to gain international recognition for the TRNC, highlighting support from Türkiye and several Turkic and Islamic nations. He pointed out that political pressures from Western countries, particularly the European Union, have delayed recognition efforts.

“We continue to promote the TRNC globally, despite various challenges and pressures,” Tatar said. “Türkiye’s recognition alone is as valuable as that of several other countries combined. We call for an end to the unfair embargoes and isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people.”

Tatar also mentioned Türkiye’s strong backing, referencing statements made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan advocating for an end to human rights violations against Turkish Cypriots and calling for broader diplomatic ties with the TRNC.

Challenges from the European Union

Tatar acknowledged the influence of Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration within the European Union, which continue to push for a unified Cyprus and discourage recognition of the TRNC. He warned against attempts to weaken the relationship between the TRNC and Türkiye.

“Despite threats and pressures, it is evident that Cyprus consists of two peoples and two states,” Tatar noted. “We will continue our efforts to represent ourselves on the global stage, with the unwavering support of the Turkish nation.”
