Türkiye spearheads global call for UN to halt arms shipments to Israel
Türkiye, spearheading a coalition of 54 signatories, has called on the U.N. Security Council to take immediate steps to stop arms and ammunition shipments to Israel. The joint letter, initiated by Türkiye, includes signatures from 52 countries and two international and regional organizations.
The appeal was formally submitted on Nov. 1, according to Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Fidan calls for international accountability
Speaking at the Türkiye-Africa Partnership Ministerial Review Conference in Djibouti, Fidan underscored the importance of the measure, emphasizing that “selling weapons to Israel amounts to complicity in genocide.” He urged nations to prevent Israel from bypassing international laws and called for heightened global accountability.
Growing global support for action
The collective appeal reflects increasing international concern regarding escalating violence and humanitarian issues in the region. The letter requests the U.N. to implement measures ensuring a cessation of arms supplies, which, according to the signatories, contributes to further instability.
Fidan underscored the importance of this step, stating, “We must repeat at every opportunity that selling arms to Israel is complicity in genocide.” His remarks reflect Türkiye’s stance on advocating for diplomatic measures to address the crisis.
Türkiye’s role in international diplomacy
Fidan stressed that the current global system, which he claimed perpetuates “historical injustices,” needs to change.
“This inevitable transformation will occur under the leadership of African countries, which the current international system has ignored,” he stated.
