‘Elisa Zonaro’s Istanbul’ exhibition opens at Kazlicesme Art
An impressive showcase featuring the work of photographer Elisa Zonaro has officially opened at Kazlicesme Art. The exhibition, curated by Omer Faruk Serifoglu, brings together a stunning collection of photographs taken by Zonaro between 1890 and 1910, alongside paintings by her husband, the Italian painter Fausto Zonaro, and various artifacts belonging to the Zonaro family.
Celebrating Istanbul’s rich artistic heritage
At the opening ceremony, Istanbul Governor Davut Gul emphasized the timeless beauty of the city, stating, “Even when looking at photographs from a century ago, it is clear that we live in the most beautiful city in the world. Culture, art, and love truly suit Istanbul, and this event fits perfectly with Zeytinburnu as well.”
He expressed gratitude to the Zeytinburnu Municipality for their efforts in promoting cultural and artistic events, encouraging continued community support to ensure these initiatives thrive.
Unique collection of historical photographs
Zeytinburnu Mayor Omer Arisoy remarked on the extraordinary opportunity for residents to experience Istanbul’s charm through the lens of foreign artists and writers. He noted that Elisa and Fausto Zonaro were inspired by renowned author Edmondo De Amicis during their time in the city.
Arisoy also highlighted that Elisa Zonaro was awarded by Sultan Abdulhamid II, which allowed her to freely access the palace and harem, capturing daily life, architecture and portraits of notable figures.
He stated, “The Zonaro couple lived and raised their children in Istanbul, leaving behind an invaluable visual legacy. This exhibition provides a glimpse of Istanbul from a century ago, as these photographs are being displayed together for the first time.”
Woman’s perspective on historical Istanbul
Curator Omer Faruk Serifoglu discussed the importance of showcasing the Zonaro family’s world in Istanbul, emphasizing the courage and effort required for a woman to create art and take photographs in public spaces during that era.
The exhibition features approximately 150 of Elisa Zonaro’s photographs and 10 original paintings by Fausto Zonaro, along with unique decorations bestowed by Sultan Abdulhamid II, who appreciated Elisa’s photographic endeavors.
Elisa’s journey with photography led her to capture a rich tapestry of life in Istanbul, and her work has now become a treasured part of the city’s artistic narrative.
Lasting impact on Ottoman-Italian relations
Fausto Zonaro served as the “Ressam-i Hazreti Sehiriyari” at the Ottoman court from 1891 to 1910, contributing significantly to the historical depth of Ottoman-Italian relations. His and Elisa’s collective work has left a profound visual imprint of Istanbul.
The “Elisa Zonaro’s Istanbul” exhibition will be open daily, excluding Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Jan. 31. Visitors are encouraged to experience this remarkable journey through time and art.
