Russian FM Lavrov to Turkish media: Türkiye would make significant contribution to BRICS
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke to Türkiye‘s pro-government leaning Hürriyet daily on various topics including Türkiye’s possible BRICS membership and Türkiye’s relations with Syria’s Bashar al Assad.
Following the BRICS meeting in Kazan, which included Türkiye as a participant, Russian Lavrov stated, “We welcome Türkiye’s interest in strengthening ties with BRICS. This demonstrates the group’s appeal, rooted in respect for the U.N. Charter, openness, pragmatism, and a commitment not to target third parties.”
He added, “BRICS aims to reinforce multilateral principles, focusing on countries with sovereign foreign policies and those refraining from unilateral sanctions.”
‘Türkiye would contribute significantly to BRICS’
Lavrov noted that Türkiye has the capacity to make a significant contribution to BRICS’ further development. “Decisions on the parameters for Türkiye’s involvement will be made by consensus, respecting the sovereign preferences of all BRICS members and Türkiye,” he said.
Lavrov also highlighted that Russia is working toward eliminating the disputes between Damascus and Ankara.
