No increase in natural gas, electricity prices in January, says energy minister
Natural gas and electricity prices will not increase in January, announced Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar.
He addressed recent speculation about price hikes, stating, “There are no plans for an increase in natural gas and electricity prices in January.”
Bayraktar emphasized that, under the new regulations, high-energy-consuming households will pay electricity rates based on actual costs. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure that support reaches those in need.
Average household energy consumption, costs
The minister mentioned that the average energy consumption per household in Türkiye is 200 kilowatt-hours. According to the new regulation by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), households consuming 417 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month will start paying based on actual costs. An average household in Türkiye currently pays a monthly electricity bill of ₺414, which will remain unchanged in January.
He explained that this new regulation will affect only high-consumption households, impacting about 3% of the total, or roughly 1.2 million subscribers. Residents of larger homes, those with more electrical appliances, or those with electric vehicles will pay rates that reflect actual usage costs. Bayraktar stressed the importance of directing support to citizens who genuinely need it.
Support for exempted institutions, including natural gas
Additionally, Bayraktar indicated that some exceptions, such as mosques and cemevis (a place of fundamental importance for Türkiye’s Alevi-Bektashiyyah tariqa populations), will continue to be included in the support scheme.
