Russia announces drills for nuclear weapons amid Ukraine war
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the country has resumed drills regarding the use of nuclear weapons.
During a meeting with military officials, he stated, “Today, we are once again conducting drills for our strategic deterrent forces.”
The Kremlin indicated that authorities will monitor actions related to nuclear weapons through the launch of ballistic and cruise missiles.
Putin emphasized that the use of nuclear weapons is an “exceptional” measure for ensuring state security. He noted, “The nuclear triad continues to guarantee our sovereignty and security, contributing to the resolution of issues in strategic deterrence, global stability, nuclear equality, and the preservation of balance among powers.”
He stressed the necessity of having modern strategic forces that are always ready for use, particularly in light of increasing geopolitical tensions and external threats.
He also reiterated Russia’s commitment to renewing its nuclear forces, asserting that the military has the necessary resources to do so. “The percentage of the Russian army equipped with modern weapons has reached 94% this year,” Putin added.
While stating the importance of protecting Russia and its citizens, Putin remarked, “We do not wish to enter an arms race, but we will maintain our nuclear power at the necessary level.”
Ballistic and cruise missiles were launched from the ground, sea and air carriers during the training.
Russia had previously conducted drills on nuclear weapons in the Southern Military District at the end of May, with those drills lasting approximately three months across three phases.
