A concert titled “From the Palace of the Principality to the Imperial Palace” was held at the Hungarian Music House on Saturday, marking a significant cultural exchange between Türkiye and Hungary as part of the “2024 Turkish-Hungarian Culture Year,” the initiative launched to commemorate the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The concert featured prominent Turkish musicians Derya Turkan, Dilek Turkan, Serkan Halili, and Ozata Ayan, who performed alongside the Hungarian Bacchus Consort. The program highlighted a blend of musical traditions from both cultures, showcasing pieces performed in the Ottoman and Hungarian courts during the 16th and 17th centuries. Traditional Turkish instruments, including the kemence, tambur, and kanun, complemented Renaissance and Baroque music played by the Bacchus Consort.

Organizers emphasized the significance of the event, noting that it showcased the rich musical heritage of both countries and underscored shared cultural values. “Such events are crucial for promoting our common heritage and strengthening cultural bridges,” the musicians expressed, highlighting the potential for future collaborations.

A year of Türkiye, Hungary cultural ties

The “2024 Turkish-Hungarian Culture Year” aims to host over 100 events throughout the year, including concerts, exhibitions, and performances in various cities across Hungary. Coordinated by Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Turkish Embassy in Budapest, and the Yunus Emre Institute, the initiative has already drawn considerable public interest. In the first four months alone, more than 70,000 attendees participated in 50 events.

Upcoming highlights include performances by the Presidential Symphony Orchestra and a digital exhibition by renowned Turkish artist Refik Anadol. The year is set to feature diverse artistic expressions, including workshops, seminars, and exhibitions that showcase both traditional and contemporary works.

Additionally, the celebration includes notable activities such as the exhibition “Hungarians Building Türkiye,” which opened in Istanbul and illustrates the historical contributions of Hungarians to Türkiye’s modernization. Renowned Turkish composer Omer Faruk Tekbilek is also set to perform at upcoming events.

The cultural year is not solely focused on the arts; a friendly football match between the national teams of Türkiye and Hungary is planned, further enhancing the camaraderie between the two nations.

With government support from various Turkish bodies and the backdrop of Hungary’s upcoming EU Presidency in July 2024, the initiative stands as a testament to the commitment to cultural diplomacy. As the year unfolds, both countries look forward to deepening their cultural connections and mutual appreciation through a rich array of events.
