Gang clashes in Haiti leaves 10 dead amid escalating violence, thousands displaced due to gang violence

According to a report in the local media, a clash erupted between two gangs in Haiti’s Petionville neighborhood in the south of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

In the incident, 10 gang members from both sides lost their lives.

A statement from the Haiti police spokesperson indicated that the security forces were not involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), due to the violence caused by gangs, 16,947 people were forced to leave their homes in the capital between March 8-14.

Armed gangs, demanding the resignation of Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry, clashed with security forces on March 2 and 3 by launching armed attacks on two prisons near Port-au-Prince and Croix des Bouquets. During the clashes, about 4,000 inmates escaped from the prison, and 12 people lost their lives.

The government had announced on March 4 that a state of emergency would be declared for 72 hours to capture the escaped prisoners and a curfew would be imposed at specific hours.
