Türkiye’s Gobeklitepe artifacts to dazzle at Rome’s Colosseum
Replicas of three ancient stone Gobeklitepe artifacts from Türkiye, a 12,000-year-old archaeological wonder, will be displayed at the Colosseum in Rome for six months, starting Thursday.
The exhibition, hosted on the second floor of the iconic structure, will run until April 20, 2025.
Cultural showcase with digital installations, films
The exhibition will not only feature replicas but also include digital installations, informational panels, and excerpts from films presented at the Gobeklitepe Welcome Center.
Visitors will gain insights into the historical significance of Gobeklitepe, often regarded as the world’s oldest temple.
The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums in Türkiye commissioned the replicas and produced Italian-subtitled films exclusively for this exhibition. Turkish Airlines has generously agreed to transport the artifacts to Rome at no cost, ensuring their safe journey.
Opening ceremony with taste of Turkish culture
An official opening ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m., with prominent figures in attendance, including Turkish Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister Gokhan Yazgi and his Italian counterpart.
Guests will have the chance to taste bread made from wheat grown in Gobeklitepe, alongside traditional Turkish delights such as baklava and dishes representing both Turkish and Italian cuisines.
Landmark in archaeology, tourism
Gobeklitepe, located in Sanliurfa, Türkiye, has captivated the world since its discovery in 1963 by researchers from Istanbul and Chicago universities. Added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List in 2011, the site has attracted record numbers of tourists eager to explore its mysterious stone structures.
The region has further expanded its tourism offerings with the introduction of hot-air balloon tours, allowing visitors a breathtaking aerial view of this ancient archaeological site.
