Fadi al-Shammari, the political advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, emphasized the importance of the Development Road Project as the most significant strategic initiative between Iraq and Türkiye.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, al-Shammari highlighted the “promising” future of Iraq-Türkiye relations, with the project set to create an economic bridge between the two nations.

Development Road Project: Strategic economic bridge

Al-Shammari underscored that the Development Road Project will serve as a vital economic link between Iraq and Türkiye, opening new horizons in trade and transportation.

“This project will enhance the circulation of goods and facilitate commercial communication, benefiting both countries by contributing to sustainable economic development and improving living standards,” he stated.

The project is also viewed as a bold step by Iraq to strengthen economic ties with its neighbors, despite regional tensions. “There is renewed hope for progress in implementing this project, supported by a strong government vision and determination,” al-Shammari added.

Strengthening Iraq-Türkiye relations

Iraq and Türkiye have witnessed significant progress in their relations in recent years, with the signing of several economic and security agreements aimed at ensuring stability and investment. “Iraq and Türkiye are working together against common threats, especially in the areas of counterterrorism and border security,” said al-Shammari.

The advisor also highlighted advancements in economic cooperation, particularly in energy and trade, noting that both countries are making strides in securing water resources. “Baghdad and Ankara are working to ensure both sides have their fair share,” he said.

Iraq’s approach to regional conflicts

Al-Shammari also addressed Iraq’s stance on regional conflicts, particularly the ongoing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel.

He emphasized that Iraq seeks to avoid becoming entangled in the conflict, instead focusing on reconstruction and stability. “Iraq is cautiously navigating away from the conflict spiral that Israel is trying to expand,” he said.
