Turkish FM Fidan engages in diplomatic talks with Russia, Armenia and Iran
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a series of high-profile meetings with his Russian, Armenian and Iranian counterparts, focusing on regional issues, bilateral relations and preparations for the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan.
His engagements aim to strengthen Türkiye’s diplomatic efforts across the region, with a particular focus on conflict resolution and counterterrorism cooperation.
Diplomatic talks with Russia
Fidan’s first meeting was with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The two discussed Türkiye-Russia bilateral relations and ongoing regional concerns, notably the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to diplomatic sources, they also reviewed preparations for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s upcoming visit to Kazan for the BRICS Summit, further solidifying Türkiye’s diplomatic outreach.
Armenia-Türkiye relations and regional peace
Fidan also met with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan to discuss the normalization process between Ankara and Yerevan. The conversation highlighted the importance of maintaining progress in peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Diplomatic sources indicated that the ministers reviewed the current stage of the peace negotiations and explored avenues to further stabilize relations in the region.
Iran-Türkiye cooperation and regional security
Today, Fidan is set to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The meeting will emphasize the importance of enhancing cooperation between Ankara and Tehran in various sectors, including counterterrorism efforts.
Fidan is expected to highlight Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening regional connectivity and increasing bilateral trade with Iran. Diplomatic insiders suggest that Türkiye will also call for restraint amid escalating regional tensions, specifically in light of Israeli actions.
Counterterrorism collaboration
In discussions with Iran, Fidan will emphasize the need for stronger joint efforts in the fight against terrorism, particularly against groups such as the PKK and PJAK. While Türkiye and Iran maintain a unified stance on counterterrorism, Turkish officials expect more decisive steps in certain areas to boost the effectiveness of this collaboration.
