Denmark raises terror threat level amid Gaza conflict and Quran burnings

Threat level at 4 out of 5, Danish security and intelligence service PET

Denmark is confronting heightened risks of terrorism both domestically and internationally in the wake of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and a series of Quran burnings within the country last year.

Danish security and intelligence service PET stated that the potential terrorist threat level has been elevated to 4 out of 5, indicating a “serious” risk.

“The conflict between Israel and a number of militant groups is of course of concern to many people, including in Denmark,” PET stated.

It emphasized that the ongoing conflict possesses a substantial potential for radicalization and mobilization, which could prompt individuals to carry out spontaneous or premeditated attacks within Denmark.

The series of Quran burnings, purportedly under the guise of free speech, in Sweden and Denmark last year sparked global condemnation, particularly across Muslim-majority countries.

Sweden escalated its terror alert status to the second-highest level last summer following widespread protests and potential terrorist threats triggered by the burnings.

In December, Denmark enacted legislation making it unlawful to burn the Quran in public spaces, whereas Sweden is deliberating its legal recourse.
