UN Chief demands EU to end ‘double standards’ in Gaza
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls on EU leaders for uniform adherence to international laws in Ukraine and Gaza, condemning double standards in crisis responses
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the importance of adhering to fundamental international principles and protecting civilians in Ukraine and Gaza without resorting to double standards while addressing European Union leaders in Brussels.
During his speech, Guterres described the current global chaos, which is marked by conflicts and a lack of accountability.
“We live in a chaotic world, with the superpowers at odds. We have a situation of impunity, where any country or any armed group thinks it can do whatever it wants because there is no accountability,” he said.
Guterres stressed the importance of sticking to fundamental principles such as the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.
He called for peace in Ukraine that respects these principles, emphasizing the need for “peace respecting the charter, international law, and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.”
The Secretary-General also turned his attention to the escalating situation in Gaza. He condemned the terror attacks on Oct. 7 and violations of international humanitarian law by Hamas.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he stated, “We also condemn the fact that we are witnessing several civilian casualties in Gaza that is unprecedented in my time as secretary-general.”
Guterres’ message to the EU leaders was unequivocal, saying: “We must stick to principles, in Ukraine as in Gaza, without double standards.”
With this statement, he directly called for a consistent and principled approach to international conflicts, focusing on protecting civilians amidst escalating global tensions.
