Roger Waters, an activist who is also known as the co-founder of Pink Floyd, expressed his admiration for Türkiye’s unwavering stance on the Palestinian issue.

Waters directly thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the people of Türkiye in a recent post on X, formerly Twitter, calling Türkiye the only voice in the West standing up against the violence in Gaza.

“No Sir Erdogan, it is we who should thank you and the people of Turkey for standing as a lone voice in the West against the genocide of our brothers and sisters in Palestine,” Waters said. This message came after he shared a video produced by Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, which commemorates the first anniversary of Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Roger Waters lauds powerful video shared by Turkish presidency

Waters praised the video posted by the Turkish presidency, calling it a “brilliant, compassionate and beautiful” depiction of the Gaza genocide. The video envisions a future where the atrocities in Gaza are remembered globally, featuring children asking their elders: “What were you doing during the genocide, grandpa?” Waters noted that the film’s impact would resonate for years, saying, “It will be remembered in 2040.”

The video underscores Türkiye’s continuous efforts to draw attention to the Palestinian cause, showcasing its dedication to spreading awareness of the ongoing crisis.

Erdogan appreciates support from Roger Waters and global figures

Earlier, President Erdogan publicly thanked Waters and other prominent global figures, including former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, for amplifying Türkiye’s message.

Speaking to journalists on his return flight from a visit to Serbia and Albania, Erdogan expressed his gratitude to Waters for sharing the video and standing with Türkiye on the issue of Palestine.

“I would like to thank people like British musician Roger Waters and former Greek Economy Minister Yanis Varoufakis who shared our feelings by sharing our video,” Erdogan said.

He reaffirmed that Türkiye will continue to expose the actions of Israel through all available platforms, ensuring that the crimes committed are communicated effectively to the world.

Erdogan also called on global powers to intervene, urging immediate action to stop the violence in Gaza. He emphasized that Israel’s aggression endangers not only Palestine but also threatens Lebanon and the wider Middle East.

“The genocide in Gaza has taken place in front of everyone and has taken its place among the historical shames of humanity,” Erdogan stated. He also warned that those who support Israel’s actions will bear responsibility for this “shame” for generations.

Türkiye emerges as leading voice for Palestinian rights

Waters’ words highlight Türkiye’s leadership in advocating for Palestinian rights. At a time when few voices in the West are speaking out against the violence in Gaza, Türkiye stands firm in its commitment to the Palestinian cause.

Waters’ recognition of this effort underscores the growing global awareness of Türkiye’s role as a powerful advocate for justice in the Middle East. His message, alongside Türkiye’s video, points to a future where the atrocities in Gaza are not forgotten but remembered and acknowledged by the world.
