Turkish defense minister speaks ahead of NATO meeting

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler emphasized the significance of defense preparedness and stockpiling in the wake of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, stating that approximately 30 countries were unable to meet Ukraine’s ammunition needs collectively.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency ahead of the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Guler underlined the importance of developing national defense industries to minimize dependency on foreign suppliers.
Guler pointed out that even countries like Norway and Finland, which consider themselves far from immediate risks, are increasing their defense budgets and investments in military industries.
Focus on counterterrorism and export restrictions at NATO meeting
Minister Guler noted that Türkiye would bring attention to two key issues at the upcoming NATO meeting: the ongoing fight against terrorism and the need for lifting defense export restrictions.
He emphasized that NATO remains crucial in ensuring collective defense and deterrence for member states, and reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to contributing to NATO’s goals.
In addition, Türkiye will advocate for immediate cease-fire and humanitarian aid access in Gaza, alongside measures to secure the release of hostages and promote peace negotiations based on a two-state solution.
Success of Claw-Lock operation
Speaking on the ongoing Claw-Lock operation in northern Iraq, Guler highlighted the significant progress made against the PKK/YPG terrorist organization.
He reported that Turkish forces entered areas previously inaccessible for 30 years, with the operation close to achieving its final goals. “We are very close to locking the door on the PKK in this region,” Guler stated, affirming the military’s determination to eradicate the terrorist threat at its source.
Advancement in Türkiye’s defense industry
Minister Guler also praised the advancements made in Türkiye’s defense sector, noting that the country’s domestic defense products, including unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters and missile systems, have played a crucial role in strengthening national security.
Guler attributed the progress to Türkiye’s focus on self-reliance and the “National Technology Initiative,” which has enabled the Turkish Armed Forces to reduce security risks and improve operational capabilities.
